Most of Federica’s data visualizations use serif fonts. Unusual: Pew Research uses sans-serifs everywhere except in the description.īut some data vis designers use serifs for labels and numbers, too: Federica Fragapane, 2022. Fonts: Georgia Italic and Franklin Gothic. Like Playfair, Postoni is a Display font: It has a high contrast of thick and thin strokes (just look at that “U” in “Ukraine”) and should therefore only be used at large sizes, like here. (The font name doesn’t seem to be an homage to data vis pioneer William Playfair.) The Washington Post, 2022. “Display” means the font is only suitable at large sizes, like in titles. The Guardian uses the same commissioned serif font for chart titles as they use for article titles. Fonts: Guardian Headline and Guardian Text Sans. Most often, serifs are only used for visualization headlines: The Guardian, 2022. Serifs look a bit more classy, traditional, and serious/professional than sans-serifs and can set a visualization apart from others out there. While serif typefaces are rare in data vis, they do exist. Bloomberg’s typeface is based on Helvetica but has a slightly straighter appearance, e.g. The Economist uses different styles from the same commissioned typeface for all text in their visualizations. Fonts: Econ Sans and Econ Sans Condensed. Most data visualizations use sans-serif typefaces - like all charts from The Economist and Bloomberg: The Economist, 2022. – in Datawrapper is possible with a custom theme. Changing the fonts – including size, placement, color, etc. Our free Datawrapper visualizations, for example, use the sans-serif typeface Roboto. They look cleaner and are often easier to skim than serif fonts, especially when it comes to numbers. For data visualizations, sans-serif (”without serifs”) typefaces are most often the better choice. Serif typefaces (like Times New Romanor Georgia) bring you into a reading flow - that’s why they’re great for setting long texts like novels or newspaper articles. This article explains all these options - and shows how ignoring this advice can set your visualization apart from others.Ġ2 Use a font with lining and tabular numbers.Ġ3 Use a font with all the symbols you need.Ġ6 Use neither overly narrow nor overly wide fonts.Ġ8 Use a high-contrast color for most text.Ĭhoosing a font Use sans-serif typefaces. On the web, that means sans-serif, neither overly narrow nor wide, regular (instead of bold or thin) text set in sentence case, in a size that’s big enough to read, and in black or almost black. Easy to read is everything that readers are used to. The short answer: When in doubt, set your text in a font that’s easy to read. And then they are so many extra ways of adjusting them (uppercase, size, color, …). Many of these typefaces come in different fonts (thin, bold, …). How should the text appear in your data visualizations? The possibilities are endless: There are millions of typefaces out there (Arial, Times New Roman, Lato, …) belonging to different categories (serif, sans-serif, condensed, wide, …).

The Telegraph are now reporting that Spurs are ‘set to part ways with Conte’. Spurshave the option to extend his deal in the summer but recent reports have suggested that the two parties will go their separate ways before next season. Believe me.”Ĭonte is out of contract in the summer. They can change the manager, a lot of managers, but the situation cannot change. The players have to be involved in this situation because it is time to change this situation if Tottenham want to change. Not only the club, the manager and the staff. “Everyone has to take their responsibility. Until now I try to hide the situation but now, no, because I repeat I don’t want to see what I have seen today. You risk to disrupt the figure of the manager and to protect the other situation in every moment. I have seen the managers that Tottenham had on the bench. Tottenham’s story is this, 20 years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stay here. They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress. He added: “They don’t play for something important, yeah. When you are not a team you cannot improve.” This season compared to last, now we are worse in this aspect. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart. We are 11 players that go into the pitch. “I think it’s better to go into the problem, we are not a team. The Londoners were 3-1 in front but James Ward-Prowse’s late penalty earned the hosts a point.Ĭonte was unable to hide his anger after the game as he accused his Spurs players of being “selfish”. Spurs surrendered a two-goal lead against Southampton over the weekend. Tottenham have reportedly decided that they will get rid of Antonio Conte ‘this week’ following the manager’s outburst after the draw vs Southampton. I hope you enjoyed this quick and dirty Scrivener tutorial, and make sure to grab your free Website Checkup to see what else I’ve got coming up. I know you’re an uber creative person, and I’d love for you to leave a comment below and tell me exactly what project you’ll be using this new writing process on! This means that whatever document format the user is working on, it. What projects will you use this process for? Tools like Markdown, Things, OmniFocus, OPML, and FreeMind can be integrated with MindNode. Rinse and repeat! I love sitting away from my desk with my iPad and coming up with ideas for my book and my other projects, and then when it’s time to write I’ve got the outline ready to be fleshed out in my favorite writing program Scrivener. You can also show all the contents and just copy and paste into whatever other program you use, whether it’s for a longer blog post or to create a PDF. When you’re ready, you can export your document by compiling it in Scrivener. The beauty of this process is that you’re not staring at a blank document – you can choose to write in any of the sub-documents and jump around as ideas come to you. Now the fun part begins! It’s time to write. Now you can use the corkboard to re-order them, add more details about each one, and categorize as necessary. You’ll see a new folder with sub-documents representing each of the nodes on your mind map.Once in Scrivener, go to File->Import->Files and choose the.You can save a PDF version for easy visual reference, but make sure you export an “opml” version too. First save the iThoughtsHD mind map (or any other mind mapping application that can export to “opml”) to your Dropbox folder, or email it to yourself. Now that this is out of the way, here’s how you go about importing a mind map into a Scrivener project (affiliate link). opml files by default, and to fix this you just need to go into Preferences -> Import -> Text Formats, and add the “opml” format. Import/Export MindNode is able to import and export a number of file formats for use within other apps: Import & Export FreeMind (supported by most mind mapping apps) OPML (supported by most Outliners and many mind mapping apps) CSV (Spreadsheets apps) Plain Text (all text editors) RTF (most text editors) Markdown. Important: Version 2.3 of Scrivener has a tiny bug that doesn’t allow you to import. Quick Notes About This Scrivener Tutorial Scrivener Tutorial – Basics and Mind Maps Click here to see part one, where I talk about my favorite mind mapping app for the iPad and how to use it to import mind maps onto your computer. This is part two of my writing process series. I’m so excited to be bringing you this Scrivener tutorial on how to import mind maps… why? Because I’ve been a fan and user of Scrivener since 2007, when I was first dabbling in the art of writing for fun. I have to progress to the next act now, and I won’t be bringing any of my current works. Now I am famous for a painting I parped out in a couple of minutes, featuring a giant spider trying to fit into a rowboat during a rainstorm, and not for the great Stretch logos who comes to sustain the world with blood from his nasal cavity. What? No! That’s not the painting you should look at! That’s – Just as I finished this masterwork, the critic arrived. Behold, “Stretch Face Nosebleeds On The World”. A critic was coming to the stall, and since you can only progress by pleasing these quiet art reviewers, I needed to put all the effort into this one. But it was time to do the Stretch Man in a new style, with fresh eyes. I sold that piece of poop for 373 euros to some damn fool with a stripey t-shirt. Here’s Stretch Man beneath a catchy slogan. Here’s “Stretch Man’s Gums Begin To Rot”. Stretch Man (who would later become Stretch Face) was born.Īs you can see, he suffered a nose bleed in his debut. An image comes to me, as through a rift in the dimensions, of a large yellow face, stretched beyond all repair, too ugly to elicit sympathy or joy, yet entrancing in its own repellent, horrific way. In a fit of listlessness after overusing the spray tool, I fart out a few rapid brushstrokes. It is called “If Camels Had Two Legs And Nice Shoes”. Ocean vistas, sunrises, hillsides at night, meadows with flowers in them that look like fried eggs but are definitely daisies. That’s about three weeks worth of bills! The spray tool is my new best friend. A punk called Maggie summed up her feelings about the porky painting thusly:īut I did sell enough of my other paintings to unlock a new method of colour-spattering – a spray tool! I make immediate use of this to create a stormy ocean scene, which I place on sale and dub “Poverty Beckons”. "Lesser Toothed Pig Beast" would remain where it stood for the rest of my time in the garage. I was happy with it, but that happiness did not extend to the general public in the slightest. This next painting, "Lesser Toothed Pig Beast", took me a little longer. There’s no shame in remembering your first painting. But I can see, even here, the direction such work would take me. My craft would eventually evolve beyond such garishness. I got started straight away and painted this monster. Later you can unlock new painting tools, but for now it’s just you, a bunch of colours and an adjustable brush size. These people must buy your masterpieces, otherwise your money slowly dwindles away on bills (baguettes, wine and rent). You start out as a loser in a garage, with a few spaces to hang paintings and some folks milling around inspecting your stuff. I tried to become famous in my own lifetime by painting a variety of wholesome scenes, including a series in which a recurring motif known as the Stretch Man dispenses various vital fluids on the people of the earth. Imagine if making bad pictures in MS Paint was a profession and you got paid hundreds of dollars for each poorly sketched sailboat you drew. But you can only do this with the most rudimentary artist's tools. Passpartout: The Struggling Artist is a painting sim in which you must splatter some canvases in the most talented way you can and hope that the discerning public will take notice of your genius. Whoever manages their Alliance effectively and employs their clan-specific cards judiciously will come out on top. As the rounds progress, it’s important to build your Alliance of Victims and Allies (both Human and Vampire) in order to gain more Blood and Influence. The winner gets the biggest spoils, but those that come in second and third place still gain Influence, and maybe a Victim here or there. Once all players have placed their cards, the locations are resolved by activating powers in turn order and counting the total power that each player has built. There are three rounds during which players will play cards from their deck and allocate blood in order to amass power at one or more of the locations in the city. The goal of the game is to accrue enough Influence in the city to take over at the end of the game, besting the other vampire clans that are out to seize Chicago. Each player controls one of the Camarilla clans of Chicago-Brujah, Gangrel, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, or Ventrue. The depth and replay value of the game pull it into the realm of games like that, but it’s really quite simple once you start. Looking at it, and even playing it, you would think that Vendetta is a medium-weight game. But don’t think it’s going to be easy because vampires are nothing if not sadistic and clever creatures. It’s always going to be an intriguing topic, but the World of Darkness properties explore this territory in a very grim and mature way that roleplayers and tabletop gamers respond to-thirstily. Definitely What We Do in the Shadows if you haven’t seen it. There is something about vampires that just excites readers, viewers, and gamers. I’m a backer on Vampire: The Masquerade - Chapters on Kickstarter, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the world-building that Vendetta has accomplished during my games, and I’m interested in several other VtM and WoD games being revealed and released. The Camarilla Kindred of Chicago don a peaceful veneer, happy to fake support for their Prince, but in secret, some are conducting a proxy war to overthrow him… Prince Kevin Jackson skillfully rose to power after a gruesome war with the werewolves, and has been ruling the city with a firm grasp ever since. The Camarilla’s North American crown jewel. Uncork the blood (I mean, wine) and sharpen your teeth (sorry, knives) as we dig into the victim (er, meat) of this game. There are seven different vampire clans, location modifiers, and relics, all combining for a filling-but-fast meal. And to celebrate the arrival of this blood-thirsty and influence-rich game, I’m deepening my look at the game to more thoroughly cover what’s possible with this Vampire: The Masquerade card game. With fulfillment happening across the globe to the more than 4000 backers, the fast-paced game is ready to hit the table. I’m happy to have the physical copy now, as playthroughs on Tabletopia can be finicky sometimes (though Vendetta plays better than most on the digital platform). That’s where the asymmetry comes into play because the clans all boast different powers and tactics in their pursuit of power. The Camarilla is back in this biting return to the World of Darkness and each clan is vying for control of the city of Chicago. The asymmetric tabletop clash comes from Horrible Guild-the team behind The King’s Dilemma-after successfully funding on Kickstarter in April of this year. At the end of September, I tried out Vampire: The Masquerade - Vendetta at the Castle TriCon event and shared my thoughts on the upcoming competitive card game. So if in the future the column object carries a new property, a new attribute will be assigned to the component, without having to change the template explicitly. That will assign each property in the column object to the attribute in the component with that same name. React's JSX on the other hand, has a syntax for this purpose: We'd have to go over every place where this component is used, and add the new attribute explicitly. Right now I have to repeat every attribute explicitly, as in: īesides being too verbose, this has a fundamental flaw: imagine if a new attribute is added to the component in the future. In Ember.Component the classNames, classNameBindings and attributeBindings properties are concatenated. In this case we do not want to pass class as an HTML attribute when calling the component because class is special in that it merged together the existing classes in the component with whatever you pass to the component: // app/components/my-button.hbsįor the sake of exemplifying attributeBindings I glossed over the fact that Ember will apply any HTML attributes you pass to an Ember component to the implicit wrapper element. attribute we are telling Ember where to put any HTML attributes that are passed in when calling the component. extend ( we are saying that the value should be primary if is not defined, and in. One of the first proposals for Ember components had actions defined as a member function of the component, like so: export default Component. How you define the component actions also requires an adjustment. Now you should use native getters and setters, as well as tracked properties. With the new Glimmer component implementation you are expected to use the native class syntax, but it also changes something more important: a Glimmer component no longer inherits from EmberObject. The first thing that catches the eye is that Glimmer components have a different base class with a radically different API (see Ember Component vs Glimmer component).
There are several educational resources that also make it a worthwhile learning utility. It can be effectively employed as a professional tool, as the myriad functions provide it with great power and versatility. Use the Select method to set the selection, and use the TypeName function to discover the kind of object that is selected. Returns Nothing if no objects are selected. To conclude, Portable Denemo is a valuable tool for composers of music or for anyone else involved in the process of creating songs. The general impression left by the program is that of a comprehensive musical composing and transcribing asset A separate module handles printing and features an ample view panel to assess the musical score. If checks reveal no errors, the project can be exported to PDF format or to PNGs (the latter mode also allows one to save selections and not the entire sheet). Once satisfied with their work, composers can play back their musical scores, by employing a built-in function. “Diatonic interval detection” or “Note name recognition”). Note reading exercises can also be performed and the application facilitates this by providing several built-in 'tests' (e.g. Browsing it reveals that aspiring musicians can train their ear by identifying scales or notes, as well as by comparing chord sounds. Without the rest of the code to see what you're doing with it this is my best guess. This notable feature allows one to employ the program for educational purposes and, indeed, there is a menu with just such a title. The simple answer to your question is (assuming objSignatureEntries is the object that contains the signature content) that you need to clear or empty the variable's contents: objSignatureEntries.Empty-or- objSignatureEntries ''. One of the features distinguishing this application from the multiple other musical composers is the users' ability to check their work as they insert notes after a musical element has been inserted, the utility automatically plays back the note and allows users with adequate aural training to tell if any errors are present. Working with the tool is performed in a highly intuitive environment and notes can be added either with the mouse (by activating GUI buttons), with the keyboard (Numpad controls) or via a plugged in MIDI instrument. The program supports most of the features that standard applications of this type offer, including the ability to create sheets composed of all types of notes (low and high notes in any key) support for multiple instrument staves is available and users also have the option to insert clefs (including treble, bass and alto). Define multiple staves with notes in any range of keys Offering users a professional solution for these needs, Portable Denemo presents itself as viable musical scores editor and creator. While for the latter part, digital tools cannot provide any significant help, for building musical scores to serve as a building block for future songs transcribing and composing programs can be employed. The art of creating music relies as much on theory, as it does on the talent of the given artist. Give up and relaunch (reopen) all Workplace programs. More complex missions can be enhanced with scripting commands. Similarly, all aircraft encountered in the game can be flown by the player, with limited fuel and realistic weapon loadouts.Īrma 2 includes a mission editor which makes it possible to create user-made single player missions or campaigns and multiplayer missions through use of the in-game wizard. There are around 130 vehicle variants, and any vehicle that exists in-game can be controlled by the player, including civilian cars, tractors and bicycles. The factions included in Arma 2 are: USMC, Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Chernarussian Defense Forces (CDF), Chernarussian Movement of the Red Star (ChDKZ), National Party (NAPA), and the citizens of Chernarus.Īrma 2 features around 80 realistically represented weapons with many variants including assault rifles, machine guns, and missile launchers, with realistically simulated ballistics. It is also considered the official successor of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (which has since been renamed to Arma: Cold War Assault by Bohemia Interactive). In June 2011, a free version of the game was released, featuring multiplayer and limited single-player modes. An expansion pack titled Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead was released in 2010. Arma 2 saw a limited release in May 2009, and a wide release from June 2009 through July 2009. It is the sequel to Arma: Armed Assault ( Arma: Combat Operations in North America), and the predecessor to Arma 3. Arma 2 is a military simulation video game developed and published by Bohemia Interactive for Microsoft Windows. From there, practice! Especially when you’re just starting out, draw as much as possible.Īnd lastly, don’t limit yourself by aiming to replicate anime perfectly. Is it the characters, the sakuga scenes, or the composition? Once you have a clear idea of what it is about the style that you love, it’s much easier to replicate. Watch anime videos that you like, and observe what it is exactly that you like about them. What tips do you have for animators who want to work on anime style projects, or animate in anime-style? Storyboard comparison from Sword of the Necromancer provided by Sunshine Animation Studio. This is because limited animation has less frames. For comparison, cleanup typically takes us just a day or two per shot. For example, we know that for the movie Klaus, cleaning a shot could take more than a week. The main difference is that production times are faster than they are with full animation. How is animating in an anime-style different from other styles of animation? But in general, Sword of the Necromancer wasn’t a very complicated project because we had previously made a trailer for the same game, and so we had most of the designs already figured out. To do this, we have to come up with fast and seamless transitions.įor Sword of the Necromancer we had to make huge backgrounds with many levels that make parallax to give a feeling of depth. In video game trailers, showing as many characters, enemies, locations and game mechanics as possible is important. The most technically challenging about the Sword of the Necromancer trailer was probably the compositing of the camera movements. What was most technically challenging about creating these scenes for Sword of the Necromancer, and why? And, when we were making the animatic, the camera compositions we chose and the fast paced action scenes were a reference to anime. Everything is drawn from scratch!Īnother technique that contributes to the anime look is that in Sword of the Necromancer we used a thin black line for the clean up. Despite this approach, we never use puppets or cut-out animation. Instead, we mix and match parts, which is why our animation doesn’t have that smooth look to it. This means we don’t use a completely new drawing for every new frame. Our animation has an anime look to it because we use limited animation. How did you use traditional digital animation techniques to create anime-style animation? Shot progressions from Sword of the Necromancer provided by Sunshine Animation Studio. Our work is an amalgamation of those reference points and styles, mixed in with what comes to us naturally when we draw. Other references include European animation studios that we admire, as well as specific artists. We watch anime movies and series all the time, and we’re very inspired by the style, so it’s fair to say that anime is a main reference for our projects. Our style is often described as anime, but I actually don’t think that’s an accurate description because the term anime refers to animation made in Japan. We get to create many fantasy worlds with lots of action! Could you describe the style of animation that Sunshine Animation tends to work in? The projects we typically work on now are for an adult audience, projects like trailers and cinematics for video games. We prefer short videos because they enable us to have a small team that’s involved in all stages of the animation process. When the studio started out, we worked on different kinds of projects, from advertising to series and movies.Īfter doing that for some time, we learned that our preference was to work on short videos, up to 2 minutes long. Our studio specializes in 2D frame by frame digital animation. We loved the experience and the creative freedom of working on that project together, and wanted to keep doing it, so we created Sunshine Animation. Making Elbion helped us discover that we were able to make animated films from start to finish: everything from storyboarding to backgrounds and effects. It was the first time in our animation careers that we worked on every aspect of an animation pipeline for a project, because in school we had never drawn a layout or painted. We met in animation school, and went on to direct a project together called Elbion. Can you start by telling us about your studio, Sunshine Animation?
